Calgary Folk Music Festival presents GETTING THERE

My musical drama Getting There will be making a return to the big screen in my hometown thanks to the great people at the Calgary Folk Music Festival. The short film will play before a performance by Jess Knights.

Doors: 7 PM
Show: 8 PM

Tickets are $20 and on sale now! Click here

Jess Knights’ debut 2018 EP, Won’t Wait, captured the grit of the rooms – and the colourful denizens – that helped her find her voice. Revivalist soul and classic roots tones ripened the sound on her 2020 debut full-length album, Best Kind of Light. With assistance from award-winning producer Joshua Van Tassel and the crème de la crème of Canadian songsmiths and sidemen, including Donovan Woods and Joey Landreth, Best Kind of Light showcases Knights’ luminous voice and burgeoning song balladeer skills.

Getting There, a short film by Brendan Prost

Tanner, a passionate and single-minded mandolin player in a multi-instrumental folk band, struggles to drag his bandmates towards productivity and relevance at the risk of his own personal estrangement. But, after a disconcerting conversation with a famed singer-songwriter, Tanner takes a moment to pause and appreciate what he has already. Getting There is a vibrant, musical consideration of an artist's struggle to collaborate and keep things in perspective.

Emotional Distancing: Short Film Livestream

Emotional Distancing is a short film program that reflects on feelings of loneliness, despair, and isolation-- before it was "trending".

Click here to join the livestream on Facebook.

Tune in for seven short films, with introductions and Q&As by the filmmakers. Ask questions, comment during the movie, and engage with us! We are hungry for connection, just like you, just like the characters in these films. All start times are approximate, and listed in Eastern Standard.

8pm - IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOUNTAIN (2017) - Two melancholy city dwellers seek to brighten their lives by escaping to a sublime mountain trail, but discover only darkness when they become lost and are subsumed by the long shadows of the landscape.
w/special guests: actors Julie Leung and Shane McLean

8:30pm - BELLINGHAM (2019) - At a moment of mutual desperation, two restless souls in different Northwest cities match online and meet up at a point of compromise. When they come face-to-face in the small town of Bellingham, they fail to connect, and are left to wander the coastline together— basking in the solace of their shared despair.
w/special guests: Arianna McGregor (actor), Andrew Lau (dop), Drew Redman (composer)

9pm - MYSTERY SURPRISE!
w/special guests

9:30pm - QUARANTINE VALENTINE (2020) - Featuring a remote cast of almost 40 people, this movie about being nice to yourself even when the order is tall.
w/Sydney Nicole Herauf

9:45pm - A WOMAN'S BLOCK (2018) - A woman recovering from a manic episode helps a neighbour out.
w/Rebecca Love

10:15pm - IT’S HIM (2017) - An unexpected encounter during an afternoon at the cinema catapults a young woman into a confrontation with her own grief, her parents' pain, and the still raw wound of her missing older brother. Over a single afternoon and evening, Shelby must sift the ground of memory, heartbreak, and hope, ever in search of a way forward.
w/Sophy Romvari

10:45pm - LET US END WITH IT TOO (2016) - A thoughtful exploration of a dying relationship told in four vignettes. When Sarah realizes that she may be falling out of love with her partner, she subsequently withdraws into herself in order to face her emotions and interpret them before acting on a potentially detonative thought.
w/Caisha Lea Thompson
